Google private browsing lets you browse without saving history or cookies on your device. It does not provide full anonymity online. For enhanced privacy, Hide Expert VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address.

What is private browsing mode in Google Chrome?

Private browsing mode in Google Chrome is called Incognito mode. When you open an Incognito window, Chrome does not save your browsing history, cookies, site data, or information entered in forms. This helps keep your session private from others who use the same device.

How to activate private browsing in Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  3. Select New Incognito window. (You can also use Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac.)
  4. A new window opens with a dark background and a message that you’ve gone Incognito.

To close Incognito mode, simply close all Incognito windows. Once closed, your Incognito session is ended and nothing from that session is retained on your device.

What data is not saved in private browsing mode?

  • Pages visited are not added to your local browsing history.
  • Cookies and site data from the session are deleted when you close Incognito windows.
  • Information entered in forms (like searches or passwords) is not saved.

Downloaded files and bookmarks created during the session will remain on your device.

Limitations of Google private browsing mode for privacy

Incognito mode only prevents Chrome from saving your activity on your device. It does not:

  • Hide your activity from websites you visit.
  • Prevent your employer, school, or internet service provider from seeing what you do online.
  • Protect you from malware, phishing, or trackers embedded in websites.

If you need to hide your browsing from your network or access sites as if you are in another country, a VPN like Hide Expert VPN encrypts your traffic and changes your virtual location, offering stronger privacy.

How private browsing differs from regular browsing

Feature Regular Browsing Private Browsing (Incognito)
Local History Saved Not saved
Cookies Kept until deleted Deleted after session
Form Data Saved for autofill Not saved
Downloads Saved Saved
Network/IP Protection No No

What does private browsing hide and what does it not?

  • Hides: Local browser history, cookies from the session, autofill data entered during the session.
  • Does not hide: Your IP address, your activity from websites, your identity from your network, or downloads made during the session.

When should you use Google private browsing mode?

  • When using a shared or public computer and you don’t want your activity saved locally.
  • When signing into multiple accounts on the same site at once.
  • For quick private searches or sessions without saving cookies.

If you need to protect your traffic on public Wi-Fi, unblock websites, or appear as if browsing from another country, private browsing is not enough. In those cases, using a VPN is recommended.
